26.04.14 -> Market

Broadway Market from above… I love living here and being able to walk out and grab a vegetarian curry or a fancy scotch egg and take it back up to our flat. The flip side is the noise from the Cat & Mutton and Off Broadway. Maybe nothing is quite perfect?

I mage made with with the A7r and my recently acquired Contax fit Zeiss 80-200 f/4 Vario-Sonnar zoom, which I was testing against my Tamron SP 70-210 f/3.5. Interestingly, while internet chatter has the Zeiss 80-200 rated lower than it’s rarer 70-210mm predecessor, I foundry copy to be very good indeed. Indeed, in my opinion the Zeiss is clearly better than the Tamron, in spite of the latter’s near legendary status as one of the best 70-210 manual focus lenses – see it’s page on

26.03.14 -> On Set

No shots on the 24th & 25th, however I couldn’t resist this on the 26th. This is Mrs Contaxian posing outside the Barber Shop on Broadway Market where we live. They were filming a commercial and we basically had to barge out way past a huge video camera rig to get out of the flat!

This was my first outing with my newly acquired Zeiss C/Y fit 28-85mm f/3.3-4 Vario-Sonnar zoom. It has given a good first impression, excellent tonal qualities with the sensor in the A7r, good sharpness one stop down and less distortion than my Canon 24-105. Later shots revealed that the one well documented tendency to flare means that care must be taken with positioning strong light sources when using it in the 28-35mm range.

08.03.14 -> Broadway Market

A quick test shot with the Zeiss FE 35/2.8 on the new Sony A7r. This is a Saturday morning on Broadway Market, early enough to be before the crowds arrive. It’s a great lens, really not that far behind the 55/1.8 for resolution. That said it does have one significant weakness – another test I made later does give some concern about a tendency to CA – even at the centre – in extreme conditions.
